Background of the Study
Artisanal gold mining is an important economic activity in Gusau LGA, Zamfara State, contributing to the livelihoods of many individuals and families. Artisanal mining cooperatives are typically organized groups of miners who pool resources, share risks, and work collaboratively. However, financial accountability in these cooperatives is often a challenge due to informal financial practices, lack of proper record-keeping, and inadequate financial management systems. This study seeks to assess the level of financial accountability within artisanal gold mining cooperatives in Gusau LGA, and how effective accounting practices can enhance the sustainability and growth of these cooperatives.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the significance of artisanal gold mining in Gusau LGA, financial mismanagement, lack of accountability, and the absence of formal financial structures are prevalent in many mining cooperatives. These practices lead to inefficiencies, resource wastage, and reduced profitability. This study aims to evaluate the state of financial accountability in artisanal gold mining cooperatives and explore how improved financial management can enhance their performance.
